Accidents in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City is where the valley’s major routes meet. I-15 and I-80 overlap through the city, I-215 loops around it, and the I-15/I-80 and I-80/I-215 interchanges see heavy merging traffic every day. Downtown, wide streets like State Street, 400 South, and 500/600 South carry heavy traffic next to TRAX light rail, pedestrians, and scooters. Crashes here often involve more than two parties: a car and a pedestrian, a driver and a commercial vehicle, or a collision that is partly blamed on a road condition.

Those details matter. A crosswalk collision downtown may be captured by business or traffic cameras, but that footage is often kept only briefly. A crash involving a UTA bus or TRAX train, or a city vehicle, triggers Utah’s Governmental Immunity Act, which requires a written notice of claim with a much shorter deadline than an ordinary claim.

Where your case would be heard

If a Salt Lake City injury case is filed, it will usually be in the Third Judicial District Court at the Scott M. Matheson Courthouse, 450 S State Street, a few blocks south of the City and County Building. Most cases resolve through negotiation before trial, but knowing the venue helps us evaluate a case realistically from day one.

What Utah law means for your claim

You generally have four years to file an injury claim in Utah (Utah Code § 78B-2-307), but government-related claims and wrongful death claims run on shorter clocks. Utah also uses modified comparative fault: your recovery is reduced by your share of fault and is barred if you are found 50% or more at fault (§ 78B-5-818). In a busy downtown crash where everyone blames someone else, that rule is often the most important part of the case.

Your own PIP coverage pays some early medical bills regardless of fault. We help you use it while building the claim against the driver who caused the crash.

After an accident in Salt Lake City

Get checked out, even if you feel fine. Adrenaline hides injuries, and a gap in treatment is one of the first things an adjuster points to. Salt Lake City has major hospitals, including University of Utah Hospital and Intermountain LDS Hospital, along with many urgent care clinics. Keep every bill and visit summary.

Photograph the vehicles, the intersection, signals and any skid marks, and note nearby businesses that might have cameras. Get the names and phone numbers of witnesses before they leave. Then call us before you give a recorded statement to anyone’s insurer.

How we help Salt Lake City clients

You get a named case manager and a standing response window. We gather the police report from the Salt Lake City Police Department or the Utah Highway Patrol (for interstate crashes), request any available video, get you to the right medical providers, and deal with the adjusters. Before you decide on any offer, we show you exactly what it means for you after fees, costs and medical liens.

Questions

Frequently asked

I was hit by a car while walking downtown. Who pays?

Usually the driver’s liability insurance, plus your own PIP coverage for early medical bills. If a city or UTA vehicle was involved, a notice of claim deadline applies, so call as soon as you can.

The crash was on I-15. Which police report do I need?

Interstate crashes are usually handled by the Utah Highway Patrol rather than Salt Lake City police. We can request the report for you.

Do I have to drive to Draper?

No. Most of the work happens by phone, text and e-signature. We can arrange to meet when it helps.

How much does it cost to talk to you?

The first conversation is free. If we take your case, you pay no attorney’s fees unless we recover compensation.
